There are two words that my campaign has been about, that I’ve spoken to you about as I’ve traveled – those two words being “pride” and “purpose.” You’ll continue to hear them because that’s really what this organization is about. That purpose that those World War I vets felt when they came home from Europe 90 years ago, understanding that they had stood beside their comrades during combat in the trenches, understanding that they still needed to stand beside their comrades as they came home because their comrades needed them, just as our comrades need us now. That purpose stayed alive for 90 years and will stay alive for another 90 years because our comrades will always need us.

Up near Saint Cloud, Minn., Ed Meyer is busy helping our troops find their way around Iraq. Hmm. He must be using gigantic semaphore flags, right? Actually, Meyer is equipping soldiers headed to Iraq with their own global positioning system (GPS) receivers. They come in mighty handy when you're on patrol and don't know the local language. GPS is a navigation/location system that works off 32 satellites orbiting the Earth. They transmit signals that give GPS users their exact locations - even altitudes. It only takes a few seconds to get the info, and it's usually accurate within a meter or so.

BY MARTY CONATSER

When The American Legion wrote the first draft of the Servicemen’s Readjustment Act of 1944, it changed the course of American history. A generation of heroes was able to join the middle class, achieve home ownership, earn higher education and live the American dream. More famously known as the GI Bill, it was hailed by many as the greatest legislation ever. Sadly, as the generations passed and memories dimmed, GI Bill benefits were so drastically reduced by inflation that many veterans either declined or were denied even the opportunity to participate in the program. Few veterans today have the luxury of attending school without also holding a job, and many colleges are totally out of reach.
