National Commander Fang Wong is meeting today with Speaker of the House John Boehner and Sen. Mark Kirk of Illinois, the ranking member of the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Military Construction and Veterans Affairs.
At the invitation of Senate Veterans Affairs Chairman Patty Murray and Ranking Member Richard Burr, National Commander Fang Wong is representing The American Legion at a roundtable discussing Microsoft’s “Elevate America's Veterans Initiative”. Meeting attendees will include representatives from several organizations that benefitted from the program’s grants, as well as a veteran who successfully used its technology training to secure a job. The American Legion is a corporate partner with Microsoft in the grant program.
National Commander Fang Wong is attending a luncheon hosted by Pew Research Center, which is releasing a major new study concerning what it calls the “military-civilian gap.” The report, “War and Sacrifice in the Post-9/11 Era”, is based on surveys of the nation’s veterans and members of the general public. The study explores attitudes about war, sacrifice and burden-sharing in the post-9/11 era.
Continuing his round of meetings with members of Congress this week in Washington, National Commander Fang Wong will meet with Reps. Adam Smith, Hal Rogers, John Culberson and Tom Rooney. Wong is briefing each on the Legion’s current legislative priorities, which include bolstering employment opportunities for veterans and ensuring the preservation, enhancement and delivery of veterans’ benefits in a timely and efficient manner.
National Commander Fang Wong is continuing a series of meetings with members of Congress and other officials. Today he will talk with U.S. Senator Thad Cochran of Mississippi, ranking member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, and Rep. Chris Van Hollen of Maryland, a member of the Joint Select Committee on Deficit Reduction and ranking member of the House Budget Committee. Commander Wong will also be sitting down with Iowa Congressman Bruce Braley, a member of the House Veterans Affairs Committee.
