Attending House Energy and Commerce hearing on Energy Access Act

The Legion is attending a House Energy and Commerce Committee hearing titled “American Jobs Now: A Legislative Hearing the North American Energy Access Act.” This proposed legislation, introduced by Rep. Lee Terry, R-Neb., would transfer permitting approval authority over the Keystone XL Pipeline to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission. Terry favors construction of the pipeline. Last week, American Legion National Commander Fang Wong expressed "deep disappointment" over President Obama’s recent denial of a permit request for the pipeline.

.Submitting written testimony on proposed changes to VA's disability rating schedule

The American Legion is submitting written testimony to a House Veterans Affairs Committee subcommittee considering proposed changes in the VA’s disability rating schedule. The changes, if enacted, are designed to streamline the overburdened disability benefits award system. The Legion, in its testimony, is calling for close scrutiny of the proposals to make sure they would not impact veterans negatively or deny benefits that are due for the sake of expediency.

American/Children & Youth staff are meeting at the request of representatives of the Girl Scouts of Central Indiana to assist them in planning a flag disposal ceremony that will be held during their Girl Scout 100th anniversary camporee at Camp Dellwood this coming April.

Veterans’ Policy Oversight Committee meeting in D.C.

The Legion’s Veterans’ Policy Oversight Committee is meeting in Washington. The committee will hear presentations on the defense budget, issues faced by servicemembers transitioning to the civilian world, and the Department of Defense’s commemoration of the Vietnam War’s 50th anniversary. Speakers will include VA and DoD representatives, as well as Legion staff.
