Testifying at a hearing before the House Committee on Veterans' Affairs.

American Legion National Commander Daniel M. Dellinger will testify before the House Committee on Veterans' Affairs at 10 a.m. (EDT). The hearing will examine patient safety, preventable deaths and delays in medical care at several Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) facilities, including those in Pittsburgh, Atlanta, Memphis, Tenn., Miami, Phoenix, Columbia, S.C., and Augusta, Ga. Hosting Department Service Officer School in Washington.

About 150 American Legion department service officers, county service officers and other accredited Legion representatives from across the country are attending The American Legion's Department Service Officer (DSO) School in Washington to receive training that will help them file benefits claims with the Department of Veterans Affairs and provide other services to America’s veterans.

Attending the International Symposium on Malignant Mesothelioma

D.C. Legion staff are attending the International Symposium on Malignant Mesothelioma presented by The Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation. The purpose of the symposium is to cover many topics relating to mesothelioma, from scientific panels to community conversations, and educate and advocate for increased federal funding of mesothelioma.

Staff from the Legion’s Veterans Affairs & Rehabilitation Division are meeting with Annie Spiczak, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs’ assistant deputy under secretary for Health for Workforce Services. The topic: Spiczak’s biggest achievements and goals, how The American Legion can assist her, and what is in store for the future of VHA’s Workforce Services. Spiczak is responsible for advancing the Veterans Health Administration’s strategic position on state-of-the-art health-care delivery and clinical workforce management in the U.S.

Attending three congressional hearings

American Legion staff will have a presence at three congressional hearings. The first, “American Energy Jobs: Opportunities for Veterans,” will focus on job opportunities resulting from the construction of the Keystone Pipeline.
The second is the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Military Construction, Veterans Affairs, and Related Agencies Subcommittee Oversight hearing on quality of life issues in the military.
