Staff from the Legion’s Veterans Employment & Education Division is meeting with both majority and minority staff from the House Ways and Means Committee to stop efforts tp repeal the Work Opportunity Tax Credit.
Legion staff is attending a Congressional Veterans Jobs Caucus briefing on the Departments of Labor and Defense veteran licensing and credentialing programs. Representatives from both departments will be there to brief VSOs and other organizations, and answer questions.
National Commander Daniel Dellinger will address a joint session of the South Carolina legislature to highlight issues of importance to military veterans and their families. He will also present awards on behalf of The American Legion Department of South Carolina to the outstanding legislators of the year for 2014.
Dean Stoline, the Legion’s Legislative Division deputy director, is attending a Senate Armed Services Committee hearing: “Defense Authorization: Overview” The committee will receive testimony in review of the Defense Authorization request for fiscal 2015 and the Future Years Defense Program.
Steve Gonzalez of the Legion’s Veterans Employment & Education Division is addressing the Association for Testing Publishers (ATP) conference. Gonzalez will address credentialing issues for veterans, barriers, solutions, and what does the future holds in credentialing for military and veterans alike.
Peter Gaytan – executive director of the Legion’s D.C. office – is attending an all-day roundtable meeting at the Pentagon w/ Department of Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel, and representatives from other veterans and military service organizations. The topic: the proposed DoD budget.
Veterans Employment & Education Division staff will be attending the National Association of State Workforce Agencies’ 2014 Winter Policy Forum’s. This event allows for The American Legion state to interact with the state workforce agency administrators and other workforce agency professionals to hear from and discuss current economic conditions in the U.S. with national experts in the field and also learn about the legislative outlook on a variety of workforce system issues facing Congress.
The American Legion is sponsoring a reception for the Department of Veterans Affairs’ National Leadership Council at the VA National Training Center in Arlington VA. The NLC is comprised the VA Central Office leadership and regional directors of the 21 Veteran-Integrated Service Networks across the United States.
Patients assigned to the Warrior Transition Battalion at Brooke Army Medical Center of Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio are guests of The American Legion through Operation Comfort Warriors (OCW) at a rodeo featuring Trevor Knowles, champion steer wrestler and strong advocate of OCW, and a concert of some of country music’s biggest stars.
