American Legion World Series underway next week

Expanded television coverage schedule, a daily Dugout e-newsletter and a Reddit chat are among the highlights of this year’s 90th American Legion World Series in Shelby, N.C.

Regional champs arrive in Shelby Aug. 9 and events continue daily through Aug. 16 at Keeter Stadium. Last year’s World Series featured a record 11 one-run games, and also saw records fall for single-game attendance (8,200) and tournament attendance (117,072).

ESPNU is expanding its coverage this year to include the final six games of the tournament: the last day of pool play, the semifinals and then the championship game at 7 p.m. Aug. 16. Every other game will be available via live streaming on ESPN3.

The Dugout, American Legion Baseball’s e-newsletter, will begin publishing a daily edition beginning Aug. 11. The Dugout will include game results, schedules and features; to subscribe, click here.

And on Aug. 15 at noon, American Legion Baseball reps will host a Q&A session on Reddit’s baseball forum. Reddit, an entertainment, social news networking service and news website, has more than 177,000 readers and is referred to as “the front page of the Internet.”

Legion Baseball fans are encouraged to ask questions during the session. Check back on www.legion.org for more details and a direct link to the chat session.

Other highlights of the week include the Aug. 6 7th Inning Stretch Festival in Uptown Shelby, and an Awareness Walk for Veterans and the Celebration of Champions featuring country music star Scotty McCreery (both Aug. 10).

And Aug. 14 is USAA Military Appreciation Day at Keeter Stadium. Veterans and military personnel receive free admission to the games, and the first 600 veterans and active-duty military personnel will receive free caps and commemorative coins and awards. Medal of Honor recipient James Taylor will be recognized that afternoon.
