Delaware Boys State learns about local government

Boys and Girls State participants in Delaware recently spent a day learning about the inner-workings of their local governments, as part of a Government Day event hosted by the three counties in the state: Kent, Sussex and New Castle Counties.

Around 40 rising high school seniors representing the Delaware Boys and Girls State programs participated in the day-long event with each of their respective county governments, allowing them to meet local leaders, tour facilities and participate in a mock county council meeting in which they reviewed actual proposed ordinances and local political issues.

Each year, the Legion's Department of Delaware urges governments in the three counties to host a Government Day event to give Boys and Girls State participants an up-close look at the local political process.

New Castle County, the state's most populous county, interviewed this year's participants in a 15-minute video segment about the experience and their thoughts on county government. Audio of Sussex County's mock county council meeting can be heard on Sussex County's website.
