American Legion National Commander Vincent J. "Jim" Troiola will present the Legion's legislative priorities to a joint session of the Senate and House Committees on Veterans’ Affairs. The presentation is scheduled for 10 a.m. Eastern Wednesday, March 1. Tune in to www.legion.org to watch live or view a replay.

The American Legion Eagle Scout of the Year winner will receive a $10,000 scholarship. Three runner-up scholarship awards will be granted in the amount of $2,500 each. For more information, click here. 

American Legion post adjutants must submit their name and email address, as well as their Boys/Girls State director's name, to National Headquarters. If you are unfamiliar with this process, speak with your department adjutant.

DSO School is virtual. The American Legion conducts two Department Service Officer School sessions each year. DSO School is geared for the professional accredited American Legion representative at the regional office, county and state levels. Attendees must be endorsed by the department adjutant, who must submit a certification form to National Headquarters. Learn how to attend DSO School.

Military veterans in and around Northwest Oregon area are invited for special service sessions hosted by District 1 of the Oregon American Legion. American Legion staff and members will be available to discuss veterans benefits, The American Legion’s legislative efforts, membership opportunities and service to the community on the following days and locations:

The American Legion National Oratorical Contest, a high school speech contest on the U.S. Constitution, awards $203,500 in scholarships each year at the national contest in Indianapolis in April. Learn more about the oratorical program.

Download the Buddy Check Toolkit to help you connect with Legionnaires and veterans in your community. As a way to reach out to members and former members who may need help, the National Executive Committee passed Resolution 18 during Spring Meetings in May 2019. The resolution calls for Buddy Checks to be conducted Legion-wide on the weeks of The American Legion’s birthday, March 15, and Veterans Day.

The American Legion’s Big Twelve Competition recognizes departments that meet or exceed their pledged membership goal percentage by the March 90% target date. The department in each category that has pledged the highest percentage and meets this goal receives the award. The percentage does not include members gained through DMS.

The winner in each category will be reimbursed for computer equipment purchases of up to $2,000. Runners-up in each category will be reimbursed for computer equipment purchases of up to $1,000.

March 25 was established by Congress as National Medal of Honor Day to “foster public appreciation and recognition of Medal of Honor recipients.” There are 3,511 recipients who have received the Medal of Honor since the Civil War. Listen to Medal of Honor stories conducted by The American Legion.

March 29 is designated as National Vietnam War Veterans Day. This is a time to pay special tribute to the 9 million Americans who served during the Vietnam War era, to the 58,000 names memorialized on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C., and to those who never received the recognition they deserved when they returned to America from war.

Race to the Top competition is divided into five categories based on the membership of the district without regard to geographic locations. District commanders will compete in each of the following categories based on final membership year totals, and a top district commander for the national award will be selected from each of the five categories. Post ribbons will also be awarded to each top district commander for all posts in those districts. Second and third place awards will also be presented in each category.
