Helm's 4x4 goals 'within reach'

At the midway point of American Legion National Commander Mike Helm’s 4x4 program, the fundraising initiative is right on pace.

As of Feb. 9, more than $2.4 million has been raised for American Legion charities, as well as those in the Auxiliary’s charities. Helm established a goal of $4 million in fundraising for the charities including Operation Comfort Warriors, Child Welfare Foundation, National Emergency Fund, Legacy Scholarship Fund, Endowment Fund and Soldier’s Wish. Also included are the Auxiliary charities, including the Emergency Fund, Spirit of Youth Scholarship Fund, Children of Warriors National President’s Workshop and American Legion Auxiliary Foundation

“These generous, tax-deductible contributions mean so much to me as every dollar will go directly toward items to help make a wounded soldier’s recuperation more enjoyable, give a much needed boost to a deserving child’s education, provide clothing and shelter for a disaster victim and so much more,” Helm said. “Our progress so far has been excellent. But we need to finish strong so that our programs can continue to support veterans, active-duty servicemembers and their families who need our assistance.”

There has also been progress made toward the other part of Helm’s goal – 4 million members combined among the Legion, Auxiliary and Sons of The American Legion. As of this week, the American Legion departments of Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee, Idaho, Florida, Utah, Hawaii and Nevada are among those showing positive gains.

Helm encourages recruiters to refer to the five-year strategic plans for building membership.

“As I meet Legion Family members throughout my travels, I am constantly impressed by their dedication to our core values,” Helm said. “These individuals work tirelessly on behalf of veterans, current servicemen and women, and their communities. But more can be done. And we need strong membership to build on the successes we’ve had. Everyone must work together at all levels to build membership and raise funds throughout The American Legion Family.”

Special American Legion family kiosks, designed to display fundraising and membership brochures at various events, are still available via Emblem Sales.

With each kiosk purchased, 100 of the following brochures will be provided:

• A new American Legion Charities brochure that provides an overview of the six programs and includes a donation form.

• A trifold with membership applications for the Legion, Auxiliary and SAL.

• The Auxiliary’s foundation brochure that describes its charity programs.

Heading into the second half of his 4x4 program, Helm strikes an optimistic note.

“When I announced my fundraising and membership goals, I described them as ‘lofty,’” he said. “Now, thanks to the dedication of numerous American Legion family members and friends, the goals are well within our reach. But, just like we wouldn’t waver in our commitment to country, we cannot waver in our commitment to a bright future for The American Legion.”
