Salute & Serve event raises Legion profile

The American Legion and Soldier’s Wish had another successful Salute and Serve Our Nation’s Heroes event last weekend in Milwaukee at the Summerfest Music Festival. Veterans, active-duty military personnel and their families gathered around the Legion-Soldier’s Wish tent to learn more about the mission of both organizations and to fill out cards to nominate a soldier or veteran for a wish.

Legion staff members from both the Indianapolis and D.C. office were on site to hand out "Why You Should Belong" brochures and Legion membership applications, as well as "Thank You for Your Service" coins.

The Legion-Soldier’s Wish tent was set up next to HISTORY’s 80-foot Cross-Country Cookout Ultimate Smoker and Grill, which served free smoked sausages and featured games for festival attendees to play, such as corn hole and ladder ball. Stars from several HISTORY programs attend each of the Cross-Country Cookout events; at Summerfest, Jay Paul and R.J. Molinere from "Swamp People" were available to take photos with avid fans, including Department of Illinois Assistant Adjutant Gary Jenson and his wife Glori. Jenson wore his Legion cap for the photo.

Future Legion-Soldier’s Wish Salute and Serve events are scheduled for:
July 20 – Chicago
July 29-31 – Oshkosh Airventure; Oshkosh, Wis.
Aug. 4-6 – Sturgis Motorcycle Rally; Sturgis, S.D.
