Veterans memorials. Since last November, 36 American Legion departments have submitted 180 submissions to The American Legion’s Veterans Memorial Identification Project. The project allows Legion Family members to upload photos and detailed information about veterans memorials and monuments in their area. For more information, visit: www.legion.org/memorials
  

Scouting. The American Legion’s support for Boy Scouts of America began in 1919, and today more than 2,500 Scouting units across the country are sponsored by Legion posts. Additionally, The American Legion’s Eagle Scout of the Year award provides a $10,000 scholarship to the first-place recipient and $2,500 to three runners-up. Award applications are due to department headquarters by March 1; department nominations must be sent to National Headquarters by April 1. Oratoical Contest. The American Legion’s first National High School Oratorical Contest was held June 1, 1938, at the University of Oklahoma in Norman. The winner received an engraved wristwatch, a four-day trip to Washington, D.C., and an invitation to the Legion’s 20th national convention in Los Angeles.  www.legion.org/oratorical
