Four district commanders earn trip to Minneapolis

Four American Legion district commanders will be honored on stage during the national convention in Minneapolis for winning their respective categories in the Race to the Top competition. The contest honors district commanders in five categories who attain no less than 100 percent of the district’s assigned membership objective by March 31.The winners, along with a guest, have won an all-expense paid trip to Minneapolis during this year’s national convention, Aug. 24-30, as a distinguished guest of National Commander Denise H. Rohan. The trip includes round-trip airfare, tickets to the National Commander’s Banquet, and hotel accommodations for six days and five nights. The winning district commanders also will receive an American Legion cap that signifies they are a Race to the Top winner.

The 2018 Race to the Top winners are:

  • Category I (districts with 15-1,499 members) – District 1 Commander Gregory Spight of Michigan
  • Category II (districts with 1,500-2,999 members) – District 21 Commander Ron Bradstreet of Alabama
  • Category III (districts with 3,000-4,999 members) District 22 Commander Jimmy Mitchell of Texas
  • Category V (districts with 7,500 or more members) – District 10 Commander Holly Lewis of Ohio

Second place winners will receive a $500 check. They are:

  • Category I  – District 20 Commander Robin Rucker of South Carolina
  • Category II – District 9 Commander Stephen  Souza of Massachusetts
  • Category III - District 11 Commander Donna Artola of Florida

Third place winners will receive a $375 check. The winner is:

  • Category I – District 8 Commander Dennis Norris of Georgia
