The American Legion will never forget

Next month marks the 20-year anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. It’s a time in history that The American Legion will never forget.

For nearly two decades, American Legion posts across the nation have conducted ceremonies on 9/11 to ensure that their communities don’t forget the lives lost that day or those lost while fighting the global war on terrorism prompted by the attack.

To commemorate the 20th anniversary of 9/11, The American Legion will conduct a special podcast series – 20 stories, 20 episodes, 20 years. Starting Aug. 16 and concluding Sept. 10, The American Legion’s Tango Alpha Lima podcast will release one  of the 20 episodes each weekday.

Special guests include:
• A Legionnaire and ferry boat captain who helped people flee New York City.
• A then-18-year-old college student who – motivated by the attacks – became an Army Ranger, surprising nearly everyone who knew him.
• A retired Marine lieutenant colonel who spent the day with the president and vice president as they discussed America’s response.
• Jessica Lynch, the first female POW to be rescued.
• An air traffic controller for Flight 93 who has not returned to work since 9/11.

The nearing of the 20th anniversary of 9/11 also means the drawdown of the men and women who are currently deployed for the global war on terrorism.
As our men and women come home, I ask all Legionnaires to welcome them home. You can do this by hosting a welcome home dinner, adding them to your Buddy Check calls, assisting them with veterans benefits and programs of The American Legion that will support them and their families.

We want to hear from you on how your post is planning to welcome home our post-9/11 veterans. Please share your story on www.legiontown.org under the category “Support for Post-9/11 Vets.”
