Item: Virginia Legionnaire Brett Reistad takes organizational reins for 2018-2019
Brett P. Reistad was elected national commander of The American Legion on Aug. 30, 2018, in Minneapolis during the organization's 100th national convention. He has been a member of the nation's largest veterans organization since 1981.
A resident of Manassas, Va., Reistad is a life member and past commander of Post 270 in McLean. He retired as a lieutenant with the Fairfax County Police Department after 26 years of service and began a second career as a law enforcement services coordinator for the Regional Organized Crime Information Center, a congressionally funded law enforcement investigative assistance program of the U.S. Department of Justice.
Commander Reistad's American Legion membership eligibility is through his Vietnam War-era service as an Army infantryman, where he served with the Presidential Salute Battery of the 3rd U.S. Infantry Regiment (The Old Guard) at historic Fort Myer, Va.
Commander Reistad has served at every level of The American Legion. He is a member of the Sons of The American Legion Squadron 10 in Manassas. His theme as national commander is "Celebrating Our Legacy," with special emphasis on the organization's centennial.

Item: Record dollars raised by Legion Riders during 2018 American Legion Legacy Run
The American Legion Riders have done it again. For the third straight year the American Legion Legacy Run has raised more than $1 million in scholarship money for the children of fallen military personnel and disabled veterans.
The 11th annual charity motorcycle ride, sponsored by USAA Insurance, raised $1,155,363 for the American Legion Legacy Fund. The Legacy Fund provides college money for the children of U.S. military personnel killed on active duty on or after Sept. 11, 2001, as well as the children of post-9/11 veterans with a VA disability rating of 50 percent or higher.

Item: American Legion Baseball World Series title goes to Delaware Post 1
On Tuesday, Aug. 21, the 2018 American Legion Baseball World Series wrapped up another exciting year of competition. The teams vying in the championship game – Las Vegas American Legion Post 40 and Wilmington, Del., American Legion Post 1 – held each other scoreless through the seven innings of regulation play. But in the bottom of the 8th inning, the home team, Post 1, scored the one run they needed to end the game and put the closer on the 2018 season. Congratulations to Post 1 in winning their first American Legion Baseball World Series Championship.
