Air power can not defeat enemy on it's owwm. Amply proven in WWII and Vietnam.

Agree! I am also concerned that we are by passing the entire discussion on the President's limitation of the use of force under the war powers act. Or do we choose to ignore our laws? I agree ISIS needs to be destroyed, but it will take longer than 30 more days and will require violating at least the air space of other countries....Congress should get of their duffs and draft an authorization to be renewed if needed a year into the next administration!

it was air power that finished japan, yes i know nuclear, but if you dont want a 40 year occupation or need to occupy territory with today's capability it (non nuclear)can take out most anything as long as you know where it is so why not use it. for that matter use it 24/7 in all its different forms until there is nothing left alive in Isis areas

It is ISIS; NOT ISIL. Israel is a recognized State and we should not disrespect our allies in such a way

We are dealing with a conflict that is over a thousand years old. What is very disappointing to me is the willingness of over 100 American citizens (both men and women) to give up their freedoms to fight for these animals against our country. It is very easy for these people to melt back into the population. Just ask the Israelis as they were fighting Hamas in Gaza as rockets were being launched into Israel from UN sponsored schools. As our troops are being killed by so called friendlies we trained in Afghanistan so the same will happen again in Syria and Iraq. My suggestion is that we continue to become energy independent and use our aircraft to bomb the old fields under ISIL control so they lose a source of funding.(Who is buying this oil?) Let the Shia and Sunnis fight it out. The Iranians and Saudis should spend their blood and treasure. Keep our boys here to defend the homeland.

Submitted by prlein (not verified) : Sep 11, 2014 8:21pm

I agree with your idea 100%. We have more oil and gas in this country that we don't have to depend on other countries. Let Arabia, Turkey and the other countries fight off ISIL. By using the air strikes to shut down their source of income will put this problem to rest a lot sooner.

Submitted by polish prince (not verified) : Sep 14, 2014 9:52am

Oh yes it can. Just one little Bomb and we won't have to worry about reoccupying that country again for a Million Years. It's going to happen sooner or later. God is in Control and Islam Looses, end of Story. If I were the Jews, I'd move as far away from Israel as I could. Millions of America's Problems solved in an instant. Then America needs to clean House with with these Beggars and Thieves that are stinking up the place.

WWII, airpower in its infancy, no comparison. Vietnam, air power restricted by no desire to win and rules of engagement. Take out the chocks, use sophisticated electronics to gather dependable intel, and remove the head from the snake everywhere you find it. Muslims hate all infidels, all westerners are infidels, chapter nine orders all muslims to kill or convert all persons who refuse to face Mecca and bang their head on the ground at least 3 times a day. Sending our young men and women into that environment is a fools game. End it from the sky or leave it alone.

Submitted by nonstop72 (not verified) : Sep 11, 2014 10:59pm

Air power defeated Japan in less than four days. Proven in WWII. ISIL is our equivalent of Hitler, our politicians lack the resolve to get the job done. MOABs can clean house but they won't be used...again, lack of resolve...our so called leaders are scared, not of losing a battle, they're scared of losing votes. They are so scared of losing votes they are making this country a joke.

If we truly want to stop these terrorist attacks & massive bloodshed, we must stop "playing nice" and trying to reason with countries whose greater population wants to see us all dead. After all, we are just infidels -- less than animals! How stupid is it to continue "training" forces to defend themselves and their own country, when they then defect to the terrorists, and in turn kill those of us who trained them!

Seriously?

We have the weaponry, lets use it! Why wait any longer when the whole world is watching to see what, if anything, we will do, both for ourselves and our allies. These terrorists only respond to a greater force than they have. There WILL be civilian casualties, there already have been, and not at our hands. If not stopped NOW, it WILL be here on our soil much sooner than you may think.

Remember, it only took one bomb, and one follow-up reminder, to end WWII. Does anyone really want to continue waiting till that is the ONLY remaining choice we have to end this one??!!

It's not like ISIL or ISIS is a standing army, like the Germans in WWII. They are in the shadows, hiding in plain sight and mixed in with the general population, like the VC and al-Qaeda, using them innocents shields. This is evil and wicked guerilla warfare. You have to seek them out, then take them out. No "surgical" airstrike can do that, and would likely result in collateral damage and deaths of innocent civilians, which would give the US and our allies, in this effort, a black eye and would infuriate the Arab and Muslim communities more than they already are. This will require human intel and boots on the ground to root them out and destroy them with extreme prejudice, incurring minimal collateral loss of life.

Submitted by Anonymous in VA (not verified) : Sep 11, 2014 3:19pm

Agree....boots on the ground will be required. "Surgical" airstrikes require boots on the ground. Sure you can put a laser on a target from another plan, drone, helicopter or "COLT" team, but only the team on the ground gives you the real human intel factor to know if your surgery was done right. Either we let the Arabs and Muslims fight it out till there is a clear winner & then deal with the winner....or we protect Big Oil up front by using overwhelming force taking the fight to ISIS where ever they are (since the mission is force oriented). A ground force given this mission should include arab muslim units but don't count on it. They would prefer to have us do the dirty work anyway since they don't like killing Arab/Muslim brothers whomever they are.

Submitted by Old Tanker (not verified) : Sep 11, 2014 3:52pm

Excellent comment, and agree totally! Air strikes alone will not do the job and may actually create an expansion of the problem. ISIS needs to be wiped off the face of the earth!

Submitted by boatso4 (not verified) : Sep 11, 2014 6:15pm

If those innocent people would speak out against the Evil that exists in that part of the world, I'd be willing to try to save them, but they remain quiet. Where are those Moderate Moslems and why haven't they spoken about the Evil that is force on them? If they fear ISIL/ISIS more than Americans, let them be turned into Dust like the Terrorists. We can't sleep nights wondering if they are Moderates or the Real Enemy. NO MORE RULES of ENGAGEMENT !!!!! What Traitor in our Government or our Military came up with that BS. Tell Karsi to get a life. Extortion has to stop.

Submitted by Steven G. (not verified) : Sep 11, 2014 10:24pm

Oh...infuriate the Muslim communities...They should be infuriated at the acts of ISIL, who stand by Muslim doctrine. One of the main problems is this "infuriating the Muslim communities". They don't seem to care when Americans get blown up. They don't seem infuriated when Americans get their heads chopped off.
Take your worries about upsetting the Muslim communities and piss off. They don't care about upsetting you, they take pride in it. Bomb them all (not all Muslims, the terrorists and their families) otherwise they'll keep terrorizing the world

I found it interesting that our "strategy" to destroy ISIS did not include any increased security measures at home.

Submitted by Old Tanker (not verified) : Sep 11, 2014 3:34pm

Increased security will defineitley come, in the way of near total loss of freedom, including eradication of the 1st and second amendments, perhaps the scrapping of the Constitution entirely.

If the Moslems can run through our Air Ports Like the Wind why do old men and women have to be strip searched. Who's Country is this ? Ask the Moslem in the White House and the Oval Office. Why are his personal body guards all Members of the Moslem Brotherhood ? He can't trust any Americans to protect him, that's why. Have you ever seen your President Wave the American Flag ??????

We are no more secure than we were 20 years ago and how many billions were spent for this "security".

The President is right. Let the airstrikes continue, provide military advisors only, NO CCOMBAT TROOPs, to those forces fighting against ISIS. Our massive airpower along with the help of allies, Iraq military, Kurds, Syrian fighting ISIS, military supplies, arms, and humanitarian assistance, should be our only involvement until it proves successful or failure. I believe that we will be successful with the strategy the President outlined.

Submitted by Samuel Marquez (not verified) : Sep 11, 2014 3:59pm

Get real, Mr. Marquez. The President's strategy is based upon hope that: (1) There will be sufficient ground troops who are sufficiently trained and motivated to fight to the death; (2) That the countries from which the ground troops come are committed to achieving the mission and will continue the commitment to the successful elimination of the radical ISIL. Keep in mind that our military leaders will exercise less than complete control on the factors needed to ensure that the ground troops are ready, willing, and able to do the dirty and dangerous job of rooting out the enemy in the urban areas. Does any knowledgeable U.S. military expert expect that this arrangement is likely to succeed...name one. Winning will be complicated, bloody, costly, and time-consuming. It's success absolutely depends upon all phases of the effort being on the same page with the precision and effort that will likely for a unified force.

Submitted by Robert Hase (not verified) : Sep 11, 2014 5:53pm

Samuel: We have No Allies and fewer friends in other countries as time goes by. We can't train our so called Allies because THEY become our Enemies tomorrow. Look at how many of our sons and daughter, who have been, shot in the Back by the trained Afghans. We can't trust the Enemy, especially the one in our White House. Keep your eye on Turkey and Iran. Russia is just beating the War Drums. Everything Obama has done is a Cluster F--k. Not one word of Truth from Him in 6 years.

Silly, who do you think is doing the training, COMBAT TRAINED TROOPS. It's already increased 4x what we started with (at least that's what numbers are given out via the MSM). do you think military advisors aren't COMBAT TROOPS, if not where did they learn to be advisors - Chitown? We started in Vietnam with military advisors, where did that get us?

Submitted by scar98 (not verified) : Sep 12, 2014 11:20am

The flaw in your idea is the "help of allies". Iraqis run at the first gunshot, our aid to Syria is to rebels with known ties to AL-qeada (an enemy of our state). It's also been shown that our arms have landed in the hands of those we are now going to fight (thank you Saudi Arabia).
The president didn't actually outline a strategy.

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) : Sep 12, 2014 10:59pm

Absolutely not, I object to any involvement without removal of the restrictive rules of engagement. When a chopper pilot observes a vehicle with a machine gun mounted in the back and/or filled with jihadis they should not have to wait for 3 or 4 layers of bureaucrats to decide if they should engage. As it stands now, by the time the decision is made the bad guys have scattered like roaches. Do not go in unless we are allowed to totally defeat I.S., the Islamic State. I also have a problem with the use of ISIL. This is a poke in the eye of our friend and only ally in the region Israel. When pResident Sport, AKA Bath house Dingle Barry uses the term Levant, it is in reference to the eastern Mediterranean region from Egypt to southern Turkey which fails to recognize Israel as a state.

Submitted by BDB (not verified) : Sep 11, 2014 4:07pm

ISIS is ISIL. Slightly different name, same bunch of killers. The US has no allies in the region.

By the way, a Moslem is a Moslem, no mater what part of the World they Occupy. Even the one in our White House. Don't trust the SOB any further than you can throw him. What's the point of telling everyone your "strategy" to attack an enemy? Do exactly like we did to Japan, Nuke a few key cities in the Middle East and everyone will get the message not to mess with us. We bite and we bite hard. Just like a mean dog. A lot of countries hate us now so what's a few more. They will get the message too! Don't talk about civilian casualties and deaths. How many died in Pearl Harbor, Hiroshima, Nagasaki, New York, Washington, DC and Shenksville? Civilians are a casualty of war. They want war? We'll bring it to them. After the first nuke falls they will be wondering where the next one is going. This is the only way to end the terrorists once and for all.

Where is the correct answer? We don't need air strikes. We don't need ground forces. STOP meddling in the Middle East. STOP providing aid to ANY side. STOP taking sides. STOP trying to "fix" things and creating new messes.

If ISIS/ISIL/Muslim Brotherhood/al Qaeda do ANYTHING domestically, deal with it domestically.

Our government tried to depose Assad (why?) and in doing so provided arms to the rebels, some of which were ISIS. This blows up in our face and now we bomb ISIS in Syria, thereby helping Assad who we are trying to depose. ISIS will fight back against US airstrikes with US equipment given to them to fight Assad. Air strikes won't work and troops will be sent. For the next ten years we will be fighting Assad and ISIS, then implementing a new government composed of other rebels who will be worse than either Assad or ISIS. Another quagmire.

Our government has caused much damage. Rather than create more damage trying to fix the previous damage, the best strategy is to take our losses and pull out. When you find yourself in a very deep hole, the best strategy is to STOP DIGGING!

S.Az.Vet: You need to realize that Obama has brought Millions of these animals into your Country and you need to help us get them out of here. Remember those Pilots who bring our Dead back home? Well, it seems that Obama has extorted them to the extent of loosing their Military Careers unless they bring 30,000 Syrian Moslems back to the US of A. All of this at the same time he was sneaking Children across the boarder. He and his friends have been Busy Trucking these Syrians all over the country. Don't disagree. A HUGE problem has been created. All I'm saying is that we need to concentrate on dealing with the create3d mess domestically, including and especially border security and returning/deporting illegals. This is no small task. But we also have to STOP CREATING NEW PROBLEMS and exacerbating old ones by meddling in the affairs of other countries.

We have defeated Iraq on two occasions. When George H. W. pulled out before finishing the job. Then again after 9/11, 2001 then Obama pulled our troops out and left no security forces behind. Now we have to go back. This is madness.

This President has no clue as to what to do. He went on an apology tour after he was first elected and blamed the U.S.A. for the worlds ills. How did this work out? Every time he makes a move he tells our enemies what we are going to do. If this guy had been President during WW11 we certainly would have been defeated.

Just wait until this guy is out of office and hope and pray we get a President who can lead the U.S.A. back to it's rightful place.

Right on Checker! We kicked Saddam in '91 only to see our government allow Saddam to still be a dictator in Iraq.In 2001 George W. went in to do what his father, George H.W. wouldn't finish or the politicians pressured him to stop the war. We captured Saddam and he was executed by his own people! The timing was "ripe" to straighten out Iraq and Afghanistan! Once again, Congress and POTUS Barrack Hussein Obama told the world when and where we would leave Iraq and Afghanistan! Nice going "A-holes". This time POTUS wants to put on a show of force in Iraq and Syria! As a military veteran, you don't give away your hand in battle, you attack, attack, and attack some more till you have turned this unforsaken piece of real estate into a "Giant Magnifying Glass". We still have the best equipped men and women in the military, let the Generals, Admirals do the job that they were trained to perform. Furthermore, keep the Left Wing Zealots and Right Wing Zealots out of the decision making process during war! When a decision is made to go to war you go into battle to "Win" the war, not allowing the waring parties to come to a "Cease Fire" unless all of our objectives have been fulfilled!
