Like other holidays, Memorial Day has become far too commercialized. People hear the big sales pitches instead of hearing about duty, honor, and country. That makes this old WW2 Navy veteran want to puke.

This Coast Guard veteran wants to puke every day that idiot is in the white house. I'm afraid memorial day has lost it's original meaning, thanks to our misguided gov't.

It's a day hyped with "memorial day sales" and a 3 day vacation. Not a clue other than that i think. The media does give it a few seconds of airtime but only if there is nothing else going one. God blees all the men that gave there all.I salute you. A Viet Nam vet, Moblie Riverine Force 13. Z-131-2

Why would any of us be so naive to think that Memorial Day be more understood and merit any less blasphemy and irreverence than other National Holidays. What are the real meanings of Christmas, Easter or other significant holidays? Who pauses to reflect, on Labor Day, about the American worker. While getting drunk and wearing silly green hats on St Pats Day who thinks about the hundreds of thousands of Irish people captured and sold into slavery in the 17th century? As a youth I remember going to Decoration Day parades a few times and hearing about Armistice Day but never really knowing what it was all about. After a three year stint in Vietnam I suddenly became aware of some different aspects of Memorial Day and Veterans Day that I hadn't understood before. That doesn't make me angry at all of those who do not understand or honor those days like I do. Non-combatants may never truly understand but they have their right to celebrate as they wish. My observances of these days is personal but sad. Let the others enjoy.

My biggest complaint is that very few people stand up, take off their hats or put their hand over their heart when the Honor Guard walks by...when I was a kid every one did. It was show of respect and reverence. Not any more. So sad!!!
