its better to have them off our shores. you don't bring in a poison snake to play with. Before long, IT WILL BITE YOU!! Think about it?

Didn't I read that Congress said NO? They control the money and said they would never fund a shutdown...

Keep it open forever to hold terrorists we don't need them on US soil.

Any terrorist not killed in the field and captured during various allied opreations, should end up in Gitmo unless said terrorists can reliably be held by an ally.

Submitted by SJR (not verified) : Feb 25, 2016 5:27pm

Gitmo needs to be kept open and used. This adm never ceases to amaze me in what they do with such little understanding of what the world is and what we (USA) need to do to stay safe. Several of the recent releasee are back on the battlefield and this adm still mumbles and stumbles with no real understanding of what they are facing or how to deal with it.

Submitted by Dennis H (not verified) : Feb 25, 2016 5:36pm

Closing Gitmo is the most dangerous act he can do in relation to terriosm. No civilian criminal trials for war crimes. Transfer all terrorists held in the CONUS to GITMO.

Submitted by BobC (not verified) : Feb 25, 2016 5:55pm

Agree with all the above. Originally all of these combatants were picked-up from the battlefields of Afghanistan, Iraq and elsewhere. They were/ are irregulars except perhaps if they are ISIS, meaning they have NO protections under the Geneva War Conventions, I don't believe, unless they are "turned" American citizens and even then it is doubtful. Bringing them into the U.S. proper for determining their War Crimes status, etc. is foolhardy and no less costly than detaining them on Guantanamo Base. And this War on Terror is far from over! And to me the argument of propaganda value to the enemy of holding them there just doesn't seem to hold up.

Submitted by James W. (not verified) : Feb 25, 2016 6:13pm

Not only should it be kept operational, obama and the clinton family should be jailed there for their crimes against America, its military and its citizens.

Submitted by Reb 1 (not verified) : Feb 25, 2016 7:53pm

Carla is absolutely right!!! So called "Enhanced Interrogation" should be mandatory for all prisoners that are sent there!! We need to know what they know and not be so PC about it. Our country and citizens security are more important than any worrying about any pain or humiliation they may suffer. Or would you rather have them beheading your friends & relatives? As for Obama and the Clintons, Gitmo is too nice of a facility for them. Send them to ISIS. They deserve each other!!!!!

Keep Gitmo Open we don't want them out and going back to killing any more of our troops or civilians. That is what they will do first chance as the record of the ones turned out tells us most have returned to try to continue to due terror against the USA & our Allies. Keep it open forever if that is what it takes. Do not bring any of them on to US Soil as someone will feel sorry for them & let them out and the Killing will start. KEEP IT OPEN AND KEEP THEM THERE!!!!!!!!

Keeping that hell-hole open only gives our enemies more cause to recruit more to their cause. We're better than that and it's time we showed the world. President Obama is correct to close it. We have plenty of space for the detainees in maximum security prisons here in the United States and we're already housing much worse there now.

Submitted by Joe Domhan (not verified) : Feb 25, 2016 10:25pm

There are many reasons why Gitmo should be closed. The primary reason is that it is a National Security risk given that it is being used as a recruiting tool by Jihadist terror groups.

That is not true. At least it never happened until the Democrats made an issue of it. Those people are living better than they ever did in the Middle East. They can do all their "religious" crap (I consider Islam a cult, not a religion), three meals a day prepared to their "religious" requirements, a soccer field, for Heaven's sake! All kinds of movies and books. They have it made!

Submitted by Cora (not verified) : Feb 26, 2016 10:21am

I am sure in your mind, Christianity is the only "real" religion in the world and all others are cults. And to take it a step further, you probably have a poor opinion of denominations that are not your own. I do agree that Jihadi A-holes doing evil in the name of Islam are cults spun from a twisted interpretation, but to put an entire culture and religion into that category out of blind hate is just wrong. So, does Freedom of Religion apply to all faiths, or only yours?

Submitted by Flatulent Fred (not verified) : Feb 26, 2016 10:54am

Cora,
It is Joe again. When I went through Navy boot camp, I did get 3 meals a day, but no TV, no books.

Jewry, Islam, and Christians all believe in the God of Abraham, and all are considered 'religions'. Get educated!

What do you call a terrorist?? Is someone who conducts a dune strike a terrorist? Is someone who goes into another country under the cover of darkness to kill what we call a terrorist a terrorist in a foreign countries eyes? So if we can keep what we feel are terrorist at Gitmo for ever without a trial then can a foreign country keep an American that they feel is a terrorist in a prison with out a trial? Remember that the way we as American acts give credit to any foreign county to act in the same manner.

Submitted by Roger Heesch (not verified) : Feb 25, 2016 10:18pm

There is no comparison. These people are actually terrorists and have proven they will harm Americans.

Submitted by Joe Domhan (not verified) : Feb 25, 2016 10:23pm

I totally agree with your comments. Also, I'm ashamed of the so called patriots here who have made such non American comments about the POTUS, who was voted into office twice by the majority. He's tried to avoid sending our children to war. I've seen enough death in my lifetime. What happened to the old Republican party? The Republican congress has stripped veterans of what they deserve.

Submitted by Rick Jania (not verified) : Feb 26, 2016 8:38am

They're already doing that to kidnapped Americans. The only difference is that eventually they behead the Americans and post the video on the internet. Sometimes they wait for a ransom to be paid by the family before they execute them.

Keep it open. I have no sympathy for the terrorists held there. Khalid Sheik Mohammed plans an attack that murders 3000 Americans and people cry about him being "waterboarded". I guess we should have sympathy for Isoroku Yamamoto too.

Submitted by Joe Domhan (not verified) : Feb 25, 2016 10:21pm

Unfortunately, most people alive today have no clue who Yamamoto was! I worked with a woman, college educated, and she was my boss, who did not know who we fought in WWII but "I assume we must have won". Unreal! The average American's attention span must be about one year, perhaps even less.

Keep this place open and try each of them for murder as they are not
members of any country's army. Do not sentence any of them to a jail
sentence but just how they will be executed. I would drown the bad ones in a tank of pigs blood-slowly.

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) : Feb 25, 2016 10:27pm

Keep this place open forever and try the Muslim killers as murders- NO legal assistance. They are not from any army and as killers they are not due ANY assistance from the USA. If in charge I would have them slowly drown in a tank of pigs blood.

I partly agree with Carla Santiago, with one exception. When you get the gay President impostor and the gay former Secretary Clinton, (a best "friend" of gay Janet Reno) and Willie, down to Gitmo, they should have to witness one execution daily until the place is empty, then just
drive off into the sunset, after locking the gates.

Due the right thing, Close Gitmo, put the terrorists in Colorado Max Security Prison to show terrorists everywhere, this is your life when we capture you and where you will die! If we don't have the guts to put them in a prison, on US soil, then let them out.

Submitted by Mac McCarthy (not verified) : Feb 26, 2016 6:05am

I assume you don't live in Colorado. Maybe we could build a super max in your backyard. From a security standpoint I like the idea of holding them on an island 90 miles from US. If you insist on closing Gitmo, maybe an island in the Pacific Ocean would work. Check with Obama to see if he would mind having it in his backyard.

Submitted by Mac too (not verified) : Feb 26, 2016 3:35pm

NO do not close Gitmo. It has been ours since Spanish American War 1898. It is vital to protection of Panama Canal and international commerce lanes in Caribbean Sea.
Yes we still have the nearby US Virgin Islands which we bought from Denmark in 1915 to protect approaches to the just recently opened Panama Canal in Aug 1914.
President Carter returned Panama Canal to Panama in 1999 which I supported; I still do.
Yes, British should return
a. Gibraltar to Spain, and
b. Falkland Malvina Islands in south Atlantic to Argentina and
Spain should return the three Spanish Cities in Morocco North Africa just across the Strait of Gibraltar,to Morocco.
British and Spanish Empires NO longer exist, but USA influence has not yet disappeared into history in spite of Pres Obama´s efforts to fade US into history and let next world power take over which based on my studies of history will probably be China.

Thanks for the history lesson professor, but it is the detention facility, not the base, that is projected to close down.

The only thing that would close would be the prison (jail) facility. Not the U.S. Navy base.

Submitted by EH (not verified) : Feb 26, 2016 2:55pm

Lets just let them all go free, that's what a lot of good people want, but when they go back to there country- s and start all over again trying to kill more Americans, some of the good peoples family-s what will you do then ? There is a problem and I do not have all the knowledge to answer this...This is why we have a government to answer this the best they can..

Just another political power play by our current national leadership. An act he (Obama) has promised for his liberal base.

Submitted by Papadale (not verified) : Feb 26, 2016 10:12am

Yes, close the facility. But, first execute the prisoners as war crime offenders. Send their ashes back to their origins. Open, a new facility in Porto Rico for future prisoners.... they need the income.

Submitted by Ronald J. Kranz (not verified) : Feb 26, 2016 10:45am

It's too bad that our country doesn't have a real President. We have a "Community Organizer in Chief" whose only concern is his legacy and keeping his campaign promises to his liberal base.

Submitted by Craig Greenhill (not verified) : Feb 26, 2016 12:01pm

The hate filled comments, bigotry, and disrespectful insults to the President of the United States that are posted on here are shameful to this organization. If this is how the membership of the American Legion displays "100% Americanism" then there is a real problem. CDR Barnett, is this really the type of responses you are seeking by asking such politically fueled questions each week? Are these comments and views really what the American Legion stands for?

That's why I will not be renewing my membership.

Submitted by Jim Creagan (not verified) : Feb 26, 2016 6:34pm

And Jim Creagan, if your membership decisions are based on emotional (possibly) free speech from another comrade-in-arms that you disagree with, maybe you should read my previous post about the oath that YOU took when you enlisted. Your oath doesn't expire when you're discharged (or, at least, mine didn't), and one who served should have enough love and respect for what this country stands for to stand up for it when our values, honor, and world respect are degraded. What this current administration is doing to our country AND our military is BS, and YOU KNOW IT.

Submitted by PAUL KLAWITTER ... (not verified) : Feb 26, 2016 8:47pm

The ignorance of the American people and especially its veterans makes me hang my head in disbelief. The underlying core of the enlisted oath is Truth. Be it, seek it, live it. I always have. And if I can see the truth of our politicians in Washington, why can't any of you. This is why our country is in the state its in because the Truth is not relevant any more. The term, "Eyes wide shut" best describes this. The America I served for 24 dedicated years does not exist any more. And its a shame my generation of veterans is slowing disappearing with it. All of you who have spoken ill of the administration instead of seeing how the houses of Congress have failed the people of this nation to the point of treason... well, nuff said. "Cast not your pearls before swine, least they be trampled upon..."

Submitted by Daniel, master ... (not verified) : Mar 1, 2016 8:12pm

I will continue to renew mine as I have for the last 21 years, and continue to disagree with many of the views.

Submitted by Flatulent Fred (not verified) : Feb 26, 2016 10:34pm

Hey Fred,
You maybe forget that all of us who served took and oath to defend and protect the Constitution... and to protect tis country from all enemies, foreign AND domestic. this current leader has done more to tear down and circumvent the Constitution, and the rule of law, than ANY president in our history. Not to mention he has ruined foreign relations with our allies and has emboldened our enemies. We who took that oath get very emotional and vocal when the security and welfare of this nation become threatened. I can't tell by your post whether you have ever taken that oath, but if you did, you need to think long and hard about how great this nation is to live in and how much it is worth defending, even from domestic threats!

Submitted by PAUL KLAWITTER ... (not verified) : Feb 26, 2016 8:40pm

And, by the way, our organization stands for God AND country. Our current president stands for neither, in my opinion.

Submitted by PAUL KLAWITTER ... (not verified) : Feb 26, 2016 8:49pm

These views are not reflective of all veterans.

Submitted by JAF (not verified) : Feb 26, 2016 10:31pm

Obama doesn't have a clue. He wants GITMO shut down because it was one of his un kept promises in his first election. If it was up to him, he would release all the bad guys, probably even give them welfare and treat them better than a US citizen would be. What a frigging joke.

Submitted by PAUL KLAWITTER (not verified) : Feb 26, 2016 8:26pm

Gitmo should only be closed after all of the terrorists incarcerated therein have been executed. Releasing them back to their hate filled, terrorist countries will only cause the U.S. to have to be on a higher state of alert for terrorist attacks. They are not going to forgive and forget. They are going to want the country that imprisoned them destroyed. That means us. It will also mean that the gun grab the Liberals are trying to con us with will only make us more vulnerable to attacks by the very terrorists we turn loose from Gitmo. Once again, Obama doesn't have a clue what he is doing.

Submitted by Gerry Wood (not verified) : Feb 26, 2016 11:06pm

Do not close GIMO! Do not bring our enemies into our country. They deserve to stay imprisoned there. Besides, if we close GITO, we will probably have to give the property back to Cuba.
