I Am The American Legion - Bill Barker

Bill Barker’s interest in shooting led him to The American Legion’s Junior Shooting Sports Program (JSSP) in the early 1990s. His dedication to young people has kept him involved ever since.

Barker, the JSSP chairman for the Department of New Mexico, happened upon the program nearly 20 years ago. As he’s taught numerous young shooters the values of discipline and focus, JSSP has become his passion.

“Marksmanship has had a positive impact on lots of young people,” he says. “I’ve had young people who have had behavioral problems in classes and were constantly suspended from school and had bad grades. I’d just say, ‘Get over there on that line and start practicing.’”
