I Am The American Legion: Richard Anderson

As a retired Air Force colonel who worked in missile and space operations, then international affairs, Richard Anderson has a wealth of experience. Now, he’s bringing that knowledge to The American Legion and the Virginia state legislature.

“That really prepared me for the General Assembly,” Anderson says of his 30-year military career. “I learned to connect, collaborate and reach consensus with people across national boundaries and cultures. I also learned to respect what other people think ... I had no idea that later on I would use that skill set.”

After becoming chairman of the assembly’s Military and Veterans Caucus six years ago, Anderson took an interest in the Virginia Boys State and Girls State programs. Having the opportunity to craft legislation for veterans inspired him to give back to his American Legion post and surrounding communities.

To encourage the next generation to get involved in public service, Anderson spends a day each year with the young delegates, introducing them to the Virginia General Assembly. While together, they discuss civic affairs and how to run for public office.

“I have learned so much from these young people,” he says. “When that generation moves into positions of leadership in our country, we are going to be in good hands. They care just as much about our country. They love America.”
