'American Legion Magazine' retains best-read ranking

The American Legion Magazine has again been ranked as the “best read” U.S. magazine, according to independent auditor GfK MRI, which compiled the annual survey of 170 publications.

This year's audit, published in July, showed that the Legion magazine finished first in the two categories surveyed: percentage of subscribers who reported reading the previous three out of four issues, and four out of four issues.

According to this year’s GfK MRI survey, 78.5 percent of Legion Magazine subscribers read at least three of the previous four issues. That number is up from 77.4 the previous year.

American Legion Magazine was the only magazine in the survey that showed at least 70 percent of readers (actually 71.3 percent) had read each of the four previous issues.

“We are very pleased with these results, which show how connected we are with our 2 million members,” said Walter Ivie, chairman of the Media & Communications Commission, which oversees the magazine. “The survey results indicate that our readers recognize the value of the content, including advertising, that we deliver each month.”

The results are especially meaningful as the Legion kicks off its centennial celebration at its 100th National Convention this month in Minneapolis. Along the way, the Legion has expanded its media program with record-setting website numbers, a growing social media program, and other initiatives.

"Little did our founders know how media would evolve since they started the magazine nearly 100 years ago," Ivie said. "But we are committed to informing and educating our members on the issues most important to them, whether that information is delivered via a highly regarded print magazine, website article, video or social media post."
