Avon, Ind. post celebrating grand opening of new building

A central Indiana American Legion post lauded for its growth after being on the verge of closing will celebrate its new building on May 7.

Post 145 in Avon, Ind., will celebrate its grand opening at 4812 E. Main St. with state and local dignitaries. The public is invited to attend the event, which includes a welcoming time from noon to 2 p.m. May 7, followed by the official grand opening ceremony.

Paul Allen, past national finance director of The American Legion, said Post 145 has served as an example nationwide for how post revitalization can work.

The post was down to fewer than 10 members in the late 1990s and was prepared to turn in its charter.

National Membership Director Billy Johnson knew that Allen lived in Avon and asked him about the post.

“At the time, Avon was the fastest growing city in the state,” Allen said. “It would be a shame if this community didn’t have a Legion post.”

Allen recruited Fred Hunt, the post’s former commander, to help him revitalize Post 145.

While growth was slow, Allen said the post’s membership now is over 1,000, including the Legion Auxiliary, Sons of The American Legion and Legion Riders.

“Over 38 years at National Headquarters, I experienced a lot of accomplishments. … This is one I’m most proud of,” Allen said. “I’m so proud of the people (who did this). Fred and I couldn’t have done this by ourselves.”

Among those scheduled to speak at the May 7 event include Past National Commander James Koutz and Indiana Secretary of State Connie Lawson, as well as other American Legion national and department officers.

The ceremony also will include an invocation, flag dedication and ribbon-cutting. Food and entertainment will be provided all day, and the Mark Reed & Andy Hall Band will perform at 7:30 p.m.
