Veterinary Medicine "Walk of Honor" and Military Veterinarian Honor Court

Veterinary Medicine "Walk of Honor" and Military Veterinarian Honor Court

The memorial includes two adjacent walkways immediately to the north (in front) of the College of Veterinary Medicine building (McElroy Hall). On the easternmost (left) side is a flagpole and bricked area defined by a low brick and stone wall. This part of the memorial is known as the “Military Veterinarian Honor Court.” It was formally dedicated in 2009. The bricks forming the court are etched with the names of veteran veterinary graduates of the college, their branch of service, and graduating class. Among the bricks honoring military veterinarians is one in memory of Lt. Col Daniel Holland, DVM, Class of 1988. The brick carries a Gold Star as Holland was killed when a roadside bomb exploded while he was serving his country during Operation Iraqi Freedom. At the base of the flagpole is a plaque bearing the seals of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), and OSU Veterinary College, and inscribed: DONATED BY VETERINARY MEDICINE CLASS OF 1987 AND MCWHORTER/WESTON VFW POST 1118 CUSHING, OKLAHOMA On the westernmost (right) side is a larger bricked patio area and walkway flanked by four stone benches and decorative plantings. A number of bricks in this area of the memorial are likewise etched with the names of veteran veterinary graduates, intermingled with other non-military honorees of the college. The walkway runs from the Farm Avenue sidewalk toward a line of evergreen trees lining the college building. Prominently displayed at the head of the walkway on the façade of the building is the Rod of Asclepius with the letter “V” superimposed (veterinary symbol). Along the walk, among the etched bricks, is a stone inlaid tablet inscribed: VETERINARY MEDICINE. At the end of the walk, at the base of the evergreen trees, is a black polished granite monument, inscribed with an Oklahoma State University College of Veterinary Medicine seal, with the number “50” and dates “1948-1998.” The dates acknowledge the 50th Anniversary of the School. Also inscribed on the monument is: COLLEGE OF VETERINARY MEDICINE WALK OF HONOR DEDICATED OCTOBER 24, 1998.
