Kaneville Cemetery Veterans Memorial

Kaneville Cemetery Veterans Memorial

The original memorial at this site was a World War I cannon dedicated shortly after the end of the War. It was dedicated as a memorial of those buried in the Kaneville Cemetery who served in the Military. That cannon was returned to the US Government for the meltdown effort during World War II. In 1975 Kaneville resident, Ralph Schleifer, wrote to State Senator, Robert W. Mitchler, and requesting that the cannon be replaced. With the help of the Kane County Council, American Legion, the request was finally approved. The new cannon (a WWII 8 inch Howitzer) arrived in December of 1975. The Howitzer was dedicated several months later in the Spring of 1976.
