War Memorial Savannah Cemetery

War Memorial Savannah Cemetery Purpose of Memorial- to honor Andrew County residents and all military veterans who were killed in action while serving our country. Dedicated: • November 16, 1928- an Andrew County Soldier Memorial Committee called upon the community for suggestions and plans in developing a memorial for World War I fallen veterans. The Committee Chairman was Fred M. Clark. • 1932- a plot was set aside in the Savannah Cemetery for the purpose of erecting white crosses and planting poppies to commemorate the lives of the men of this country who had made the supreme sacrifice. • November 7, 1946- Clinton L. Allen Monuments of Maryville completed the walks and cross-walks of the War Memorial Cemetery plot, and set 52 grave marker stones of the veterans killed in action. Two Added Notes: #1- It should be added: January 4, 1921- American Legion Dick Munkres Post 287 started displaying the service pictures of the deceased veterans from Andrew County. These pictures can still be seen within the Post 287 Legion building. There is a cooresponding gravestone with each of these pictured veterans at the War Memorial Savannah Cemetery plot. #2- November 7, 2001- an additional sidewalk was added to the south. The sidewalk was then covered with donor bricks. An engraved donor brick can be purchased and installed honoring any military veteran from the Civil War to present day.
