Irwin Nike Site Memorial

Irwin Nike Site Memorial

A Cold War memorial that is part of a larger monument honoring all who served in our nation's conflicts. This is the only segment that honors a specific military unit. Between 1956 & 1974 every major American city was ringed with a series of surface to air missiles. There were two versions Nike Ajax and Nike Hercules. Missile Battery C of Site PI 36 was located in the Irwin, Pennsylvania area. The US Army manned all of these defensive missile batteries.
