Calhoun County Bayfront Veterans Memorial

Calhoun County Bayfront Veterans Memorial

6 pointed star to commemorate all military branches with circle in the middle Family circle where family chose to place their veteran together as a cluster regardless of military branch. Each star point honors veterans of that branch and our sixth star point is the Merchant Marines. The memorial consist of 7,260 pavers and at this point we have 667 named pavers. Each star point supports the military branch flag and at the center we have a thirty foot American flag. Our memorial sits at the bayfront facing the bays and we have the memorial lit at all times during the night. We have had several flag retirements that has involved our community schools where the students were bused from the school to our memorial. This year (2018) will be our third year celebrating Memorial day at the memorial as well as a tour on Veterans day depending on the weather. We have veterans to date as far back as the Civil War, the first WWI Famous Dough Boys, including veterans from the Batan death march Guadalcanal, Iwoa Jima, France, Italy, Korea, Vietnam, Desert Storm, Deseret Shield, Africa and many more but most of all you should hear our war stories and the calming effect our memorial has on visiting Veterans from all over. We have a General that comes to visit every two or three months to have coffee at the memorial with his brother, a WWII Navy veterans that lost five brothers to the war and he comes with his Whataburger coffee withe several cups and sits them down on his brother's pavers and has coffee with them. There are several Vietnam Veterans that get together and come pray the rosary on special occasions. Gregory Falcon and Ron Langford were the organizers of the memorial.
