Elkhart Veterans Memorial

Dedicated to local veterans of wars. Special facts about the park honoring Elkhart veterans: • The doughboy statue, “Order of Arms,” was made before the more common “The Spirit of America” statue and gifted to the Elkhart American Legion after World War I from the remaining vets to honor those who didn’t make it back home after the war. • Plaques have been added to the statue with names of village veterans from World War II, the Korean War, and all veterans killed in action from Elkhart during past wars. • The park is handicap-accessible with a U.S. flag depository, landscaping, a reflective sitting wall and benches. • Veterans Park honors all the military personnel of Elkhart in a unique exhibit dedicated in 2019 and funded with five grants, donors, business partners and local help. (The park received a WWI Centennial Memorial 100 Cities/100 Memorials grant.) • The Elkhart Legion post hosts an annual Memorial Day Service. 2022's guest speaker will be Chaplain LTC Karen Diefendorf. The service normally draws 100 people of all ages. • A very well-preserved Krups K-14 cannon sits in front of the local library. It is one of only two known to exist.
