Robert N. Austin Riverside Veteran’s Memorial

The Robert N. Austin Riverside Veteran’s Memorial was built to replace the wooden honor roll board that displayed the names of the World War II veterans of Campbell, New York. Over time the original honor roll board became so badly damaged that it had to be taken down. The Riverside Veteran's Memorial monument is located at 8458 County Route 333, Campbell, New York. The monument sits between Legion Post 1279 and the Cohocton River facing County Route 333. The monument is made of concrete; approximately 30 feet long, 2 feet high in front and 4 feet high in back holding approximately 500 red bricks that are 4 by 8 inches or 8 by 8 inches. On the bricks the veteran’s names, rank, branch of service and sometime dates are engraved. One section holds the names of the 119 names from the original Honor Roll Board of the Campbell World War II Veterans. A black granite slab in the center holds the names of the charter members of Post 1279. There is a section dedicated to the names of Past Commanders of Post 1279. All Veteran's from Campbell and Legion members can purchase bricks with their names, branch of service, rank and dates that are also displayed on the monument. There are bricks available for the future Veterans. This was all done with monies from the Post 1279. The Sons of the Legion of Post 1279 paid for the engraving of the bricks for the 119 World War II Veterans. Construction began in 2016 and on September 30, 2017 the Robert N. Austin Legion had an official dedication ceremony for the Riverside Veteran's Memorial monument, open to the public which included; food, music and fireworks. The monument is in excellent condition and will continue to be maintained by the Robert N. Austin Post 1279.
