Edmo Gay American Legion Post 187

The memorial was set to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the American Legion and of the Edmo Gay American Legion Post #187, Plainville, Kansas. The post was named in memory of Edmo Arthur Gay of Plainville who was aboard the HMS Otranto. On October 6, 1918 he was among the hundreds of American and British casualties as a result of the Otranto being rammed by another troopship during a storm. The collision resulted in the HMS Otranto losing power and being being broken apart upon the rocky shore near the Isle of Islay off the coast of Scotland. The memorial was set near the Grand Army of the Republic monument in front of the Township Hall. In 1988 Plainville’s centennial time capsule was set in this area.
