Veterans War Memorial, Hayesville, North Carolina

The October 17, 1946 ceremony agenda: War memorial service held on Saturday, October 19, 1946 and the Clay County Memorial stone was dedicated and unveiled. Mr. Vernon Martin, Commander of the Bob Roach American Legion Post 177, was master of ceremonies. About 250 people gathered at the corner of Hayesville Square at 2:00 pm. The memorial stone was draped in black with speakers on the left and a piano and choir of Legion boys on the right. There were cut flowers from the Clay County Gardens at the base of the stone. Seats were facing the monument in the street for parents and relatives of the boys. Program: • Song: “My Country tis of Thee” • Invocation: Reverend L.P. Smith, Pastor of Hayesville Baptists Church • Introduction of Speaker: Mr Allen Bell, County Superintendent of Schools • Speaker: Mr. Smathers, Asheville Attorney and former soldier of World War II The stone was unveiled while Legion choir sang "My Buddy" with piano accompaniment by Mrs. C.E. Standbridge • Benediction: Reverend Dupree
