New London Veterans Memorial
Our memorial is located in New London, Wis., on the world-famous Wolf River known for its sturgeon spawning run. Our foundation met to discuss a design approval and site for the memorial. At a January 2015 meeting we had 26 members, not all veterans. We approved a budget of $300,000. The city of New London and the surrounding townships have a population of 18,000. With their great response, and that from the local businesses, we were able to stop fundraising in three years. We ordered the granite for the wall panels to have room for 1,120 veterans' names and went forward with the construction. We had the dedication of Phase 1 in the summer of 2018. There are now over 1,100 veterans' names on the walls from the War of 1812 to the present time. We have installed new panels for an additional 560 names. The work is finally completed, and the city is taking responsibility for the future with audits annually with the veterans organizations.
