DeKalb Veteran's Memorial

DeKalb Veteran's Memorial

The new DeKalb Veteran's Memorial held its official dedication on Saturday, Oct. 1, 2022. With the completion of phase one, local veterans are excited to showcase this expression of patriotism to honor all war eras. The DeKalb Veteran's Memorial was developed and conceived in 2018 by Michael Embrey (USAF veteran) and the land for the memorial was approved by the Elks Board of Directors in 2021. The new memorial will be one of the first regional memorials that will include the newest military branch, the US Space Force. This memorial was created to honor all six branches of the U.S. military, with a total of nine flags (US Army, US Navy, US Marine Corps, US Coast Guard, US Air Force, US Space Force, American flags, POW/MIA, and Elks flag). The large brick patio (24 feet wide and 54 feet long) in front of the flags has inscribed bricks honoring veterans (current and past), and active-duty military. The first round of dedicated bricks included 150 servicemembers. More will be added every year. "This new memorial is more than just a dedication to veterans - it represents our commitment to supporting veterans and veterans' families in our community," commented creator Embrey. "We want this new Veteran's Memorial Plaza to be a place where people meet and share the common goal of paying homage and honoring our men and women in uniform and those who served." In addition to the flags and brick patio, there is a firepit dedicated to all veterans and two private benches (one dedicated to Vietnam-era veterans and one to USAF veterans - other to come). DeKalb, Ill., has been branded as a "Veteran Friendly City" with a variety of projects honoring veterans and current servicemembers throughout the community.
