Larry "Lars" Hartley

Larry “Lars’ Hartley, 62, of Brookings, died Friday, May 11, 2012, at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Sioux Falls, S.D. Funeral services were held at Grace Lutheran Church in Bruce.

Larry Eugene Hartley was born Sept. 21, 1949, at Estelline, S.D., to Chester and Olga (Skovlund) Hartley. He grew up and attended school at Bruce, and then joined the U.S. Navy in 1968 during the Vietnam War. He received his GED while in the Navy. He was discharged in 1972 and returned home to take care of his mother, who was ill with cancer. He worked at the physical plant at SDSU until ill health forced his retirement in about 1993. He also worked part-time at Danny’s Lounge in Brookings.

“Lars” was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, the VFW in Brookings, and The American Legion in Bruce. He enjoyed riding his Harley, cooking, and collecting guns and knives.

Survivors include a brother, Harlan Hartley, of Brookings; nephews Paul (Eva) Hartley of Brookings, and Ben and Joshua Hartley of Monticello, Minnesota; great-nephews Dylan and Landon; great-nieces Raihanna and Molly Jo; aunts, uncles and cousins; and a special “daughter,” Michelle Wilson. He was preceded in death by his parents and many aunts, uncles and cousins.
