Kenneth R. Metcalf

St. George, Utah - Kenneth Robertson Metcalf, 86, passed away peacefully on Feb. 15, 2014, surrounded by his family. He was born on Oct. 1, 1927, in Springville, Utah, to Maurice and Zina Robertson Metcalf; he was the third of eight children. He married Beverly Robbins Metcalf on June 11, 1947, in the Salt Lake City LDS Temple.
Ken was raised in Springville and graduated from Springville High School. He served in the U.S. Navy near the end of World War II. He attended Brigham Young University and graduated from the San Francisco College of Mortuary Science in 1948.
Ken moved his family to St. George, Utah, in 1967, where he purchased the Cannon Funeral Home - which became Metcalf Mortuary. As a funeral director, he gained much satisfaction in the honor of serving Southern Utah families. The mortuary is well-known for the beautiful flowers from spring to fall that he planted and cared for.
Ken loved St. George and the surrounding communities. He served as president of the St. George Chamber of Commerce and was a co-founder and director of Sun Capital Bank in St George. He was the first president of the foundation of Dixie Regional Medical Center and later served as honorary chairman of the capital campaign for the new hospital.
A devoted member in the LDS Church, he served as an Elder’s Quorum President, High Councilman, St. George Utah Stake President, Michigan Lansing Mission President, and as a Southern Utah Regional Representative. He also served as a counselor and president of the St. George Temple, where he continued his service as a Sealer. Ken loved serving the Lord and those he served with.
He is survived by his wife Beverly of 66 years; three daughters and two sons: Terry (Brad) Cottam, St. George; Kris (Jeff) Feltwell, Santa Clara, Utah; Rick (Juliana), Orem, Utah; Ron (Cindy), St. George; Jan (Larry) Sisneros, Syracuse, Utah. He has 28 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren with three more on the way. He is also survived by his sisters: Kathlyn Mendenhall, Las Vegas; Mary Rich, Salem, Ore.; Colleen (Garth) Tingey, Richland, Wash; and brother Sam (Bonnie) of Springville, Utah. He is preceded in death by his daughter Debra and brother Harold.
Funeral services were held Saturday, Feb. 22, at the Bloomington LDS Stake Center in St. George. Visitations were held on Friday, Feb. 21, at Metcalf Mortuary, 300 West St. George Blvd. and at the Bloomington LDS Stake Center prior to services. Interment followed in the Tonaquint Cemetery.
