Gail Wesley Probasco

Gail Wesley Probasco, 93, formerly of Bartley, passed away at the Cambridge Manor on Thursday, Oct. 12, 2017. He was born June 14, 1924, at Indianola, Neb., to Daniel Gail and Nellie May (Webb) Probasco.
Gail grew up on a farm north of Indianola with his parents and sisters. He attended country school near his home, then graduated from Indianola High School in 1942. He enlisted in the U.S. Army during WWII on Dec. 20, 1943. He was a combat engineer serving in the European Theatre. Gail was honorably discharged on March 4, 1946. On Feb. 26, 1944, he was united in marriage to Elsie L. Heinz of Culbertson, in Augusta, Ga. Gail and Elsie raised three sons; George, Gary and Dennis.
After Gail’s discharge from the Army, he and his family moved north of Indianola where they started to farm. After living in the Indianola area for seven years they moved north of Bartley to continue their farming operation for 21 years. In 1972, they bought a house in Bartley where they lived until health concerns required them to move to the Cambridge Manor.
Gail was a lifetime member of Bartley American Legion William Wright Post 245 and Marian Schaffert V.F.W. Post 730. He was a 70-year member of the Bartley Masonic Lodge and Eastern Star. He was a member of the Kemper Memorial United Methodist Church, Bartley, Neb.
Gail farmed for many years, worked at the Bartley Co-Op, Davidson Gravel for 25 years and drove a school bus for Bartley-Twin Valley District for over 40 years. He served on the Bartley Town Board and the school board. He enjoyed fishing and hunting with his sons and grandsons. He was a devoted father, grandfather and great-granddad. He enjoyed cutting firewood, removing snow for the neighbors, spraying yards and helping many area farmers.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Dan and Nell; wife, Elsie on March 12, 2015; granddaughter, Kari Rae Probasco; and sister, Grace Burton.
Gail is survived by his sons, George and wife, Gayla, of Arapahoe, Gary and wife, Diana, of Jefferson, Colo., and Dennis and wife, Beverly, of McCook; six grandchildren, Gregg, Brooke, Todd, Ryan, Erin and Tony; eight great-grandchildren, Jaedyn, Austin, Taylar, Grace, Tripp, Daniel, Aynslea, Delaney and soon-to-be-born another great-granddaughter; and sister, Goldene Burton of Cambridge.
Funeral services will be held at the Cambridge United Methodist Church on Monday, Oct. 16, 2017, at 10:30 a.m. with Pastor Jeff Wulf officiating. Burial will follow in the Bartley Cemetery with military honors.
