George T. Mahan Sr.

George T. Mahan Sr., 75, of Enola died on Sunday, Dec. 20, 2020. Born in Harrisburg, he was the son of the late Howard and Mary Mahan (Mack’in). He was also preceded in death by sisters Geraldine Papandrea and Nancy Freedman Pelovitz.
He retired in 2001 from the Public Utility Commission, serving as bureau Director of Transportation and Safety that included Motor Carrier, Legal, Rail and Gas Inspection divisions. He had previously served as chief, Motor Carrier Services and Enforcement with a combined 27 years. His law enforcement career included service with both Harrisburg and Lower Paxton police departments.
After graduation from John Harris HS in 1962, he served with the Army's 101st Airborne Division. He joined the headquarters PA Army National Guard, retiring as sergeant major in 1989. He was a member of American Legion Post 1001 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7415. He was a vocalist with the ‘Remember When’ singers. George loved sports, playing on two state championship Legion basketball teams and with various Army football teams.
Surviving are his beloved wife, Evie (Magaro) Mahan; his son, George Mahan Jr., of Collegeville, Pa., daughter-in-law Sharon (Simon) Mahan, and grandsons Nathan and Matthew Mahan. George is also survived by his brother Richard Mahan Sr., and sister Mary Lou Mellick of Bethlehem, Pa.
There will not be a viewing. George’s wishes were to have a private family service at the Indiantown Gap National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, any memorial donations are requested to be sent to the Bethesda Mission, P.O. Box 3041, Harrisburg, PA 17105.
