Who won the first National Post History Contest?

Ken-Bur-Bel Post 41 of Norwalk, Ohio.

The contest was first approved by The American Legion's National Executive Committee in 1928, and the first competition was held in 1930. According to the September 1930 issue of The American Legion Magazine - now available on the Legion's Digital Archive - Post 41 historian Clark C. Tucker was credited for his 200-page entry, beating out more than 50 entries in the last stage. His prize was "a motion picture camera."

In the early years of the contest, competing post histories were exactly that, the entire history of the post. Post 41received its temporary charter in 1919 and its permanent one in 1924. It wasn't until 1972 that entered histories became only about the past year.

2014 entry certification forms for the post contest and the National Department History Contest must be postmarked to National Headquarters by Sept. 15.
