How was creating a home for Post 11 in South Dakota a real team effort?

According to the Wagner, S.D., post's page on the Centennial Celebration site: "The home post was first built in 1929 after members of the post bought bonds. The basement was dug by hand and the building was built by volunteers. The members that purchased bonds got together and burned their bonds in the Legion fireplace so no member of their families could demand payment on the bonds. Several years later members raised money to add on the metal building to the south, 2-13-1991. The post now serves refreshments and a meal every meeting night at no charge. Members take turn cooking, the time is all volunteer."
