Virginia Post 177 again hosting Rolling Thunder events

American Legion Post 177 in Fairfax, Va., will again be a hub for American Legion Riders activities related to the Rolling Thunder Ride to Freedom on Memorial Day weekend in Washington, D.C.

Legion Riders from all over the nation will gather at Post 177, 3939 Oak St., beginning May 27. From there, they will take part in various rides that will culminate with the Run to the Thunder at 7:30 a.m. May 29.

Highlights of the weekend include a ride to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial for a candelight vigil and a wreath-laying at Arlington National Cemetery. Gold Star Families will be honored, and Medal of Honor recipient Hershel "Woody" Williams also is expected to attend.

American Legion Emblem Sales and other vendors will be on hand throughout the weekend. For a complete schedule of events, click here.

Post 177 began hosting the event in 2012 to give Legion Riders another national event to attend, said Bob Sussan, chairman of The American Legion Riders Advisory Committee and a member of Post 177. The event's continued growth "was our intent from the beginning," Sussan said. "We wanted to give the Riders something to attend nationally in addition to the Legacy Run."

For those planning on attending who will need a place to stay overnight, campsites are available to rent during the weekend in nearby Cheltenham, Md. For more information, click here. There also are several hotels in the area with rooms still available. Click here for rates and locations.
