Members of the Post 911 family joined hundreds of others to remember Ryan Winslow, as well as others killed in the line of duty, at two events on Memorial Day, May 29, 2023.
The 15th Annual Memorial Day Observance was at Alabama National Cemetery in the morning. “The Memorial Day Ceremony, planned and executed by the Support Committee, is a time in which fallen heroes are remembered and honored in the way in which they deserve on the day set aside especially for that purpose,” according to the committee’s website. “In keeping with our mission, we shall not forget those who paid the ultimate price for our freedom and will comfort and honor their families for their sacrifice.”
In the afternoon, the dedication of the Alabama Fallen Warriors Monument was held at Veteran Memorial Park in Trussville. The monument, envisioned by Mark Davis, honors 227 Alabamians who lost their lives in service to the country since Sept. 11, 2001. The 115 who were killed during combat are recognized on columns with 3x6 inch dog tags listing their name, rank, age and location of death. The 117 servicemembers who died non-hostile deaths are recognized on 12x12 inch pavers.
