Virginia Veterans Memorial raising to get Virginia Iraq Veterans Memorial built

Members of American Legion Braxton-Perkins Post 25 in Newport News, Va., members from other veterans service organizations, community organizations and community members are coming together to get Virginia its first Iraq Veterans Memorial built.

This is part of the press release from Virginia Veterans Memorial, Inc. dated Aug. 8, 2022:
"Many men and women of service have not only died in wars, but have also come home after serving their country. The gift that these men and women have given to their country needs to be remembered. One way to remember their efforts is through the construction of a memorial. These memorials celebrate national spirit and heritage. They are usually pieces of art and sculpture that enrich the landscape of an area. They are paid not out of the state or city treasury, but by the generous contributions of the citizenry, to stand as a permanent reminder of the bravery and devotion of our local sons and daughters in service to the Republic.
There is probably no place in the country more directly connected with the vast and varied activities of our Army, Marines, Navy, Air Force and Coast Guard in fighting its battles during the latest conflicts than the Commonwealth of Virginia.
Twenty-years ago our nation was attacked by terrorists who killed more Americans than were killed at Pearl Harbor. The wars that followed were unlike any others in our history. The Nation was not asked to step up, not asked to make any sacrifice. Our brave service men and women were asked to make exceptional sacrifices over and over again for the nation on a level never seen before. Every last one was a volunteer. Our best and our brightest men and women set aside their civilian pursuits to serve their nation’s cause, defending the freedom of mankind and preserving our precious American heritage.
There were no ticker-tape or welcome home parades, for them just a quiet thank you. The Virginia Veterans Memorials, Inc. was formed as a non-profit two years ago from existing veterans service and community organizations who believe the time is right to start building a memorial to Virginia’s Iraq War Veterans, to be located adjacent to the Virginia Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Huntington Park. The Afghanistan War memorial project will soon follow."
