"A Hero Passed Away"

As a member, past commander, and bugler for the American Legion Post 140 Honor Guard in Riverton, Utah, I would like to share a poem I have written, titled "A Hero Passed Away."

A Hero Passed Away

There are many other things
We could have done today,
but they’ll wait until tomorrow.
A hero passed away.

With our rifles, a bugle
and Honor Guard attire,
we’ll stand at the graveside
lined up in single file.

O’er our comrades casket,
the nations flag will lie.
Three volleys from our rifles,
will, with honor, say goodbye.

A bugle will sound taps
touching hearts within.
We’ll then fold the flag
and give it to the next of kin.

Yes, there are many other things
we could have done today.
But now’s the time to honor
A Hero Passed Away.
