On behalf of Historic Programs (https://www.historicprograms.org) and the D-Day Committee, the Amityville American Legion Pipe Band has been nominated as Lead Pipe Band and Official Representative of the United States during D-Day commemoration ceremonies in Normandy, France, in June 2023. This invitation is based on the pipe band’s outstanding professionalism and standing in the community.

The Amityville American Legion Pipe Band will be performing official music for all events, including wreath-laying and commemoration ceremonies at both Brittany and Omaha Beach American Cemeteries, and parade services in Sainte-Mère-Église (the first town liberated by American paratroopers on D-Day).

The Amityville American Legion Pipe Band was founded in 1952 by WWII veterans of Amityville American Legion Post 1015 and granted written permission by Queen Mother Elizabeth to wear the well-known “Black Watch” plaid of the 3rd Battalion, Royal Regiment of Scotland. Not all pipe bands have this distinction. In 1979, local officials from the village of Amityville and Le Bourget (a suburb of Paris) established a Twinned City alliance to promote friendship and cultural exchange. In 2015 the band relocated to Massapequa American Legion Post 1066 and performs at various veteran and community service events for Post 1066 throughout the year.

The band is extremely honored to be chosen for this prestigious event. As an American Legion pipe band, we are proud to represent The American Legion and reaffirm its roots founded in Paris over 100 years ago.
