At the general meeting of Post 271, Mauldin, S.C., on Nov. 8, 2022, Post Commander Ken Hinkle, awarded me and three other gentlemen with a Quilt of Valor. Given that this is my story, the following is from my perspective. I had no idea that I had been considered or nominated until October 2022. Needless to say; when I was told I inwardly struggled with thoughts of "I don't deserve this high honor. I am not worthy."
On Nov. 8 I "slicked" up, and my service dog Candy accompanied me. In my left hand was a piece of hematite. It took all but one spoon to not break down sobbing and crying during the ceremony.
