ROSEDALE, NY – American Legion Post 483 feeds more than 1,000 families in need of food through their weekly pantry.

The American Legion is the country’s largest wartime veterans service organization. American Legion Post 483 of Queens accepted the mission of feeding families during the COVID-19 crisis. The mission of The American Legion is accomplished through volunteers. Volunteers include a mix of veterans of Southeast Queens, residents of Queens, and various grassroots organizations. Since the response to the COVID-19 crisis, an average of 30 new families have registered for the pantry each week.

The special deliveries to at-risk seniors and shut-ins are conducted by volunteers of grassroots organizations. Over 20 volunteers answered the call to deliver food to seniors at their homes. The seniors live in Far Rockaway, Jamaica, Rosedale, Laurelton, Hollis, St. Albans and Rochdale.

A key supporting organization is the BlaQue Resource Network, a Facebook community group. The group has over 4,300 members. The founder of the group, Aleeia Abraham, received a proclamation from the New York City Council during Black History Month. This effort with The American Legion is led by Tanagra Bledman, a board member of the group. Khaleel Anderson also volunteers coordinating deliveries to Far Rockaway.
