My mother is the widow of a retired Marine officer. She keeps telling me that she wants to go live in a Retired Officers Wives Home in Virginia. Is there such a place? I’ve looked but have had no luck finding anything. – Karen
While there is not an official government widows’ home, there are certainly a number of communities and facilities throughout the country that cater to retired military and their spouses. As an example, I know that right here in San Antonio we have Air Force Village, which caters to retirees of all branches of service. These self-contained military retirement communities serve retired military officers, their spouses, widows and widowers, affording them the opportunity to live among others with similar backgrounds. This is a continuing-care community, including assisted living, nursing care and some with Alzheimer’s care. So I would recommend broadening your search to include communities for retired military, including Continuing Care Retirement Communities (CCRCs), and see what you can find.
