My Pap

I am from Chester, West Virginia,
From a beautiful love story,
I am from hugs and kisses good-bye,
From bringing my country glory,
I am from fighting for my parents and for my wife,
From helping others by risking my life.
I am from restless nights with endless bombs
From gunshot rhythms turning into songs,
I am from fearless demeanor with an aching heart,
From my loved ones being a world apart.
I am from joyous news, relief that made me cry,
I can go home now I have survived.
I am from celebrating, reconnecting with my family,
From my stunning wife and three happy babies.
I am from nightmares, vivid visions of war
From working day and night for my loved ones furthermore
I am from grandchildren, the light of my heart,
From teaching them to cook and fish,
My legacy they shall start.
I am from sitting inside on the 4th of July
Because fireworks and bombs are far too alike.
I am from a new battle, this time it’s against myself,
From cancer and medicine taking up all the spots on the shelf.
I am from getting weaker, but putting up a fight,
From holding on for my family as they stay with me
Through this time of fright.
I am from God calling me home- from my family I must go,
From a glistening heart, and a golden soul.
I am from Vietnam and Chester, but this I must say,
I helped make this land free, but most importantly,
I was brave.
