Dear Jimmy

My name is Robert P. Lupinacci. I am attending Community College of Allegheny County South Campus in Pittsburgh, PA. In the Spring semester of 2014, my English professor had us write a paper based on the concept from a book that Tim O’Brian had written titled ”The Thing’s They Carried.” It is a book about his Vietnam War experiences and in particular, the things the soldiers carried for luck or protection. I wrote a letter in memory to my cousin, who carried his mother’s Rosary beads and a Catholic prayer book with him, titled “Dear Jimmy.” Writing this letter was healing for me since I never had closure after his death, and I think that this letter I wrote about my cousin could be a positive and healing thing for others too. It also honors the memory of the men and women who served their country well in the Vietnam War. They died from the complications from being around Napalm or Agent Orange and are just as much of an American Hero as the people who died in combat.
