Celebrate families for National Family Week

Nov. 21-27 will mark this year’s National Family Week when American Legion Family members are encouraged to promote and celebrate healthy families and communities.

Download The American Legion’s National Family Week brochure for ways to celebrate National Family Week.

Posts can get involved in established local National Family Week activities; encourage local and state governments to observe and engage in National Family Week; and help organize a family festival that includes fun and safe activities for the whole family.

National Family Week was initiated by Sam Wiley, a teacher, basketball coach and school administrator in Whiteland, Ind. Wiley noticed “the difference in children who came from strong, supportive families and those who were not being raised in a traditional family unit.” He initatied the idea to set aside a time during Thanksgiving – when families traditionally gather to give thanks for their blessings – “to recognize the important role family plays in our society.”

National Family Week was first proclaimed by President Richard Nixon in 1972.
