Lake Land College Veterans Memorial

Lake Land College Veterans Memorial

The memorial is located on the small campus of Lake Land College to honor all servicemembers past, present and future. The black granite Veterans Memorial was designed using values we all learned to live by: Courage, Sacrifice, Respect, Service, Duty and Honor, and is anchored by the quote of an unknown author: “Never forget those who bore the scars and those who gave everything.” When planning for the Veterans Memorial started, organizers asked many veterans what they would want to see in a memorial. The response most often given was "personal," and from those who did not serve, a “flag.” The memorial is described as a 28-foot-long, jet-black granite wall with seven sections, each depicting imagery that personifies courage, sacrifice, and other attributes American servicemembers live by. It was dedicated in November 2019. The U.S. flag is made of solid granite from quarries throughout the United States and was dedicated in June 2022. The flag, comprising three different colors of granite - representing red, white and blue - was installed near the memorial. Both monuments were made possible by the Lake Land College Foundation fundraising campaigns during the course of more than three years. The first class of students at Lake Land College arrived in 1966. Throughout the beginning years of the college, many of the students were veterans returning from Vietnam. Since that time, we have had many more veterans return from service throughout the world.
